  Vastu shastra is all about managing the energies in the space that you have to the best possible extent. Most homebuyers prefer East-facing houses as that direction is associated with good luck and prosperity. South-facing homes are generally considered inauspicious and get the bad rap many times due to the belief that Lord Yama, the God of Death, lives in the dakshina or South direction.

However, the truth is Vastu shastra does not specify a direction as being good or bad. Scientifically, the East or North directions are preferred because it is easier to orient the house towards them compared to the South, which entails more effort.

Draw out the South part of the house and divide it into nine equal parts or ‘padas’ from the South-East to the South-West. The kitchen should be located towards the North-West or South-East corner of the house to catch the purifying rays of the morning sun. It is also believed that the god of fire rules the South-East and placing the kitchen in this direction, along with plenty of ventilation and light would be ideal.

Pro tip: The door of the kitchen should face North, East or North-East and all cooking activities should ideally take place facing the East.

Determining the bedrooms

The master bedroom should ideally be located in the South-West, where the most positive energy is said to be accumulated. If the house has multiple floors, it is advisable to keep the master bedroom at the topmost level.

Pro tip: The other rooms in the house can be positioned in the North-West.

• Make the walls on the South and the West stronger and higher than the other sides.
• The shape of the house is an important aspect of Vastu. Constrain your house to rectangular or square shapes particularly for a South-facing plot.
• The South-West corner should not have features like car porches, septic tanks, gardens or water pumps as this is associated with losses or health issues.
• Try to plant trees or keep large flower pots in the North-East side to drive away negative energy.
